Call to pass Bill to allow exhumation at Tuam Mother and Baby Home

A PROPOSAL calling on the government to pass a legislative Bill so the remains of babies at the Tuam Mother and Baby Home site can be exhumed has been passed by the members of Mayo County Council.

Historian Catherine Corless has been calling for the necessary legislation to be passed urgently.

The support of Mayo councillors for her appeal to have legislation passed as soon as possible was sought by Councillor Brendan Mulroy when the local authority met yesterday (Monday).

He stated that the UN has found that the children were buried illegally and there is, he said, no need as far as he is concerned for the government to be holding it up. The legislation needs to be passed.

It is believed that up to 800 babies and children could have been buried in a mass grave at the home.
