Victim of Mayo road tragedy was close to home when fatal collision occurred

A man in his 40s who died following a hit-and-run road collision in Castlebar last night was walking close to his home when the tragedy occurred.

Councillor Michael Kilcoyne said he has been informed that the victim, not a native of the county, resided within close vicinity of the suspected hit-and-run collision.

“It is terrible that any motorist would leave the scene of a accident where a person was seriously injured,” he stated.

The pedestrian was treated at the scene, between Cathal Duffy's Roundabout and the crossing from Pavilion Road and The Curragh estate, before being brought by ambulance to Mayo University Hospital where he died from his injuries.

The crash occurred about 11.50 p.m

A post mortem is due to take place.

The result of the post mortem is expected to determine the course of the garda investigation.

As the garda investigation continue, they would like to speak to any witnesses and have appealed for any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam), who were travelling in the area between 11.20 p.m. to 12.20 a.m. to make this footage available to gardaí.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Castlebar Garda station on 094 903 8200, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.
