Mayo communities in mourning over passing of talented young sportsman
Warm tributes have been paid to Raphael Sunday, Cloontakilla, Bangor Erris, whose death has taken place.
An accomplished young sportsman, the deceased was a third-year student of St. Brendan's College, Belmullet.
A tribute by the college stated: "This is a terrible tragedy for his family, our school and our community.
"Raphael was very popular among his fellow classmates and played an active part in school life.
"He had a keen interest in sport and represented the school on many sporting occasions and he will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
"We extend our sympathies to his family and friends at this sad time. May his gentle soul rest in peace."
Bangor Hibs FC said Raphael was a popular member of the club's underage set up and played with the club from under-10 right up to last year when played for the under-17s.
"He always had a good relationship with all his coaches and teammates and will be remembered as an individual who gave everything on the pitch and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
"We extend our sympathies to his family and friends at this sad time."
In a tribute, Ballycroy GAA Club said they had lost a hugely valued member of their underage club whose man-of-the-match performance in a county final last year was instrumental in the victory he and his teammates earned.
"He was much loved and will be greatly missed by his family, friends and teammates, coaches and the many club members who knew him. Ar dheis dé go raibh a h-anam dílis," the tribute added.
The funeral arrangements will be announced later.
