Archbishop of Tuam formally submits his resignation to the Vatican

The Archbishop of Tuam, Dr. Michael Neary, has formally submitted his resignation to the Vatican in line with Canon Law making it mandatory for bishops to do so on reaching the age of 75.

Dr. Neary has served in the role for 26 years.

A native of Newport Road, Castlebar, he was ordained in 1971 and held a number of teaching and clerical position, both in Ireland and Italy, until his appointment as Auxiliary Bishop of Tuam in 1992.

He was appointed Archbishop of Tuam in January 1995.

He will continue to serve in the position until his successor is appointed by Pope Francis.
