GAA stars join in extensive N5 clean up of Mayo dashboard litter
A MAJOR operation has taken place along a busy Mayo motorway to clean up roadside rubbish discarded by dashboard litter louts.
Up to 30 volunteers, including a number of players from Castlebar Mitchels, joined members of Castlebar Tidy Towns over the weekend in undertaking an extensive roadside litter pick-up of the N5 from Mulroy's Roundabout to the exit for the village of Turlough.
The amount of rubbish collected in two hours - 200 bags - sadly reflected the lack of respect so many motorists have for the local environment.
A Castlebar Tidy Towns spokesperson stated: "The litter collected included 300 energy drink cans, not to mention all the coffee cups and plastic water bottles. It was unreal."
The committee has issued a fresh appeal to all vehicle owners and passengers to uphold a green policy by disposing of all litter in a proper manner and to never throw it out of a window.
"It would make such a difference to our efforts in improving the status of the county town in the annual National Tidy Towns competition," the committee spokesperson added.
