North Mayo lighthouse due to open to visitors this summer

BLACKSOD Lighthouse in north Mayo is due to open to visitors this year.

Exhibiting the lighthouses of Erris and their history, it will be a must stop on any trip to Erris.

The lighthouse's position in world history was commented upon by local Councillor Gerry Coyle at a Westport-Belmullet Municipal District meeting, where he said it will be a huge project for the region.

It should be one of the most famous lighthouses in the world, he added, as it was from here that the D-Day Normandy landing was put back for two days due to the weather forecast that issued from it.

“What a place in world history,” he commented.

A lease of the property to Comharchumann Forbartha Ionad Deirbhile, Eachléim, is due to come before a meeting of Mayo County Council for approval on Monday.
