Mayo candidate to contest Dublin Bay South by-election

Sarah Durcan, a native of Castlebar, has been selected by the Social Democrats to contest the Dublin Bay South by-election.

Ms. Durcan said the by-election is about housing and “the quality of all of our lives as we emerge from lockdown."

She told the media: “This by-election is not only a referendum on this government, but on a way of political thinking that has locked out and sold out a generation – lacking imagination, ambition and the ideals of who we truly are as a people.”

Sarah is the Associate Director of Science Gallery International, the non-profit organisation building the world’s first university-linked network that brings science, art, technology and design together to deliver world-class educational and cultural experiences for young people, and now with nine members worldwide and an investment of €180 million to date.

She is a member of the Expert Network of the World Economic Forum.

Sarah was a lead organiser of the #WakingTheFeminists campaign to achieve gender equality in Irish theatre and serves on the advisory panel of Dublin City Council’s Culture Company.

She has previously served on the boards of the Abbey Theatre, Theatre Forum and GAZE Film Festival.

Her background is in theatre producing and financial management and she has worked as the Executive Producer for award-winning Irish theatre company, The Corn Exchange, as General Manager of Dublin Theatre Festival and General Manager of Dublin Fringe Festival.

Sarah has a degree in Communications from Dublin City University and a masters in Cultural Policy and Arts Management from University College Dublin.

She is a daughter of former Mayo independent county councillor Frank Durcan.
