New chief executive welcomed at Mayo council meeting

THE new chief executive of Mayo County Council, Kevin Kelly, received a warm welcome at his first meeting of the authority today (Monday).

In setting out his approach to the job, Mr. Kelly said it is always about people - working with people and for them.

After 34 years working in local government, Mr. Kelly brings a wealth of experience to his new role.

He will be working closely with all the elected members and staff and other organisations they can collaborate with to achieve the best outcomes for Mayo, he said.

As a west of Ireland man, Councillor Richard Finn, cathaoirleach, was positive the new chief executive would fight for the people of the county and the west.

Councillor Peter Flynn noted that there were exciting times ahead, not without its challenges. They were all there to serve the public and do their best for people.

The new chief executive's reputation for steadiness, absolute ability and fairness from his time in Galway was commented on by Councillor Al McDonnell.

Tribute was also paid to Mr. Peter Duggan, who reverts to his financial director's position having served as interim chief executive for the past year.

He had taken on the role at a difficult time with Covid and did a magnificent job leading the council for the past 12 months, the meeting heard.
