Mayo TD 'prepared to leave Fianna Fáil over pyrite scandal'

Mayo TD Dara Calleary has made clear to senior party figures that he is prepared to leave the party unless full redress is offered to the victims of the pyrite scandal, according to a report in the Irish Examiner.

It revealed Deputy Calleary and other rural colleagues made their views known ahead of last Tuesday’s Cabinet meeting which was central to the government decision not to oppose the Sinn Féin Dáil motion calling for 100% redress.

The threat of several TDs resigning over the issue forced the Government’s hand, sources told the newspaper.

Speaking yesterday, the Ballina-based TD said if there is a choice of standing with the people or with his party, he will stand with the people.

The Irish Examiner further reported that at a meeting of the Fianna Fáil parliamentary party last night, Deputy Calleary again called on the government to “sort it out."
