Make R312 road to Belmullet a priority
THE R312 from Castlebar to Belmullet has to be on the priority list for the road works programme.
The Minister for Transport, in the Dáil, recently said he had received no submission from Mayo County Council for any work on the road.
Councillor Michael Kilcoyne, at a municipal district meeting this week, asked if that was correct and if so, why.
“This road is a priority for us,” he said, noting the significant portion that is in the Castlebar district.
Councillor Blackie Gavin said they had agreed the R312 would be the No. 1 priority for this area.
Describing it as ‘a difficult drive’, Councillor Donna Sheridan said she had spent four years driving on it and something needs to be done.
It can be very dangerous and it needs to be on the priority list.
Senior engineer Anne Sweeney said the road was and is the number one priority for the Castlebar Municipal District.
She would check with the road design office about submissions.
There was some good news with regards the R312 - the bridge at Glenisland is progressing, she said, and she expected it would be open before the end of the summer.
