Litter louts continuing to target Mayo river despite efforts by clean-up volunteers

Clean-up volunteers in Castlebar are up in arms over the targeting of the Town River by litter louts.

Less than three days after Castlebar Tidy Towns members Joe Butler Kevin Rowley and Councillor Ger Deere removed dozens of bottles, cans and other litter from a section of the river, the litter louts have struck again.

Said Councillor Ger Deere: "It is so disheartening to see new litter in the river, undoing all the good work carried out 72 hours earlier.

"A new bin was installed at this spot only last week but those responsible for this act choose to ignore it and throw their rubbish into the river instead.

"I am making a renewed call for CCTV to be located at this area to stamp out anti-social behaviour and this type of destruction of our beautiful amenity.

"It's unacceptable."
