Search for hiker missing on Mayo mountain

A search operation is taking place on Mweelrea mountain for a hiker reported missing.

The alarm was raised yesterday evening after the man, aged in his 30s, failed to return.

The search team includes members of Mayo Mountain Rescue and An Garda Siochána.

The Irish Coast Guard helicopter is also due to assist the operation - but heavy mist and low cloud cover are hampering the search.

Mweelrea is located between Killary Harbour and Doolough in south west Mayo and at 2,671 feet is the 26th highest peak in Ireland.
