PLANS to commemorate the late Princess Grace of Monaco in Newport are progressing.
Newport Business Association has applied for planning permission to erect a commemorative statue of the princess, whose ancestors hailed from the locality.
It is proposed to site the statue on Castlebar Street in the town.
Newport Business Association plan to commemorate both of its Graces - Princess Grace Kelly and also Pirate Queen Grace O'Malley (Granuaile).
Newport is to be marketed as the town of 'The Two Graces', with statues of both iconic women to be erected in the town.
Prince Albert of Monaco, who, like Princess Grace has visited the family's ancestral home, has indicated that he will attend the unveiling of his mother's statue. The prince visited Ireland last weekend.
