Mayo boy wins top prize of €2,500 in Woodie's budding gardeners competition

Nine-year-old Eric Moore from Castlebar has won the first prize a family holiday voucher worth €2,500 in the Woodie’s DIY, Home and Garden competition for budding gardeners.

The competition was designed to encourage children and families to celebrate the joy of gardening.

Woodie’s asked children to flex their green fingers this summer by working on their very own garden patch for their chance to win some fantastic prizes.

Hundreds of children got involved this summer and spent time in their gardens working on flower beds, veg patches, patio pots and window boxes.

All entries were judged by Woodie’s Gardening expert Brian Burke, renowned for his judging skills on RTE’s Super Garden, and who had a very tough job choosing the winning entry, such was the high standard.

In the end he chose Eric, stating: “I went with Eric because the space he took on was ambitious, it’s plain to see that he got stuck in and had fun doing it and he used a nice mix of plants and plant types. It looks like it was a real project for this budding gardener, one at which he chipped away over a period of time.”

Hilda Lyon, Head of Marketing at Woodie’s, congratulated Eric on his success.
