Pressure mounts for Ballycroy to be restored to national park's name

PRESSURE is increasing to have the decision to remove the name Ballycroy from Mayo's national park reversed.

Westport-Belmullet Municipal District councillors resolved yesterday (Wednesday) to write to the department in charge and possibly even send a delegation to meet with officials as part of the community effort to get Ballycroy restored in the park's name.

Having voted back when the park was founded to have the name Ballycroy included in its title, Councillor Gerry Coyle said now it appeared that they had no say at all.

Councillor Paul McNamara said the renaming of the park as the Wild Nephin National Park was a disgrace and an insult to the people of Ballycroy.

He asked that the MD would write to the department to show their anger and frustration at the decision.

Councillor Coyle said if Wild Nephin had to be mentioned, so be it, but it was simple for Ballycroy to be in there too.

MD cathaoirleach Councillor Brendan Mulroy suggested a delegation needed to go to the department to have it out with them. They would go and they would bring Ballycroy with them.

If they let this go other names would change, he warned.
