Traffic and pedestrian worries at busy Mayo town centre junction

The busy junction of Main Street, Castle Street, Shamble Lane and Ellison Street in Castlebar is a cause of fresh traffic concerns.

Councillor Ger Deere said pedestrians crossing between Main Street and Ellison Street were at the mercy of traffic coming from Shamble Lane.

He explained: "It's a blind corner for pedestrians and many of them don't realise just how quick cars are coming up Shamble Lane.

"It is a particular worry for visitors who are completely caught off guard.

"So there is an onus on Mayo County Council to put a proper pedestrian crossing there with signage.

"It needs to be looked before somebody is hurt."

Councillor Al McDonnell also called for a traffic box on the road surface at the location because cars coming from Main Street en route to Ellison Street often blocked the flow of traffic into Castle Street from Shamble Lane

"I've looked at the location and there is plenty of scope for a traffic box. I am sure it would greatly improve traffic flow there at different times of the day," he added.
