Mayo GAA chairman to stand down at forthcoming convention

Mayo GAA County Board chairman Liam Moffatt is to step down from the position at the county convention this coming December.

A statement issued by the organisation tonight explained: "At a meeting of Coiste Bainistí tonight he informed the officers of the board that he will not be seeking a nomination for a third term as chairperson of Mayo GAA at the upcoming convention.

"The chairperson indicated that his decision was based on business and personal reasons. I would ask that our chairman be given the respect he deserves for making a very difficult decision.

"Nominations for Convention will be sent out by Mayo GAA to Clubs in the coming weeks. Once nominations have been submitted, they will be communicated to the clubs."

There is little doubt that the position of Mayo GAA County Board chairman is a very tough job and one which is very time consuming. It is also a job where one has to, and is expected to, make some very tough decisions.

While some of these decisions would not be popular with everyone associated with Mayo GAA, they have to be done for the betterment of the organisation.

It is virtually impossible to keep everyone happy and onside.

The recent saga of the Mayo senior team management issue, the proposed planned appointments of a financial controller and a high performance coach, and the Lough Lannagh project, among others, are likely to have put an extra strain on the chairman.
