Ballina to be focal point for Mayo’s Climate Call to Action

THE spotlight will be on Ballina on November 12 and 13 as Mayo marks the end of the United Nations' Climate Change Conference COP 26 in Glasgow.

COP 26 brings global leaders, including Ballina’s own Mary Robinson, together to agree goals and actions that will decarbonise nations and address the global climate emergency.

Those engaged in climate action in Mayo will gather in Ballina over the weekend to highlight local actions underway and planned in Mayo’s communities that can have far reaching climate impact.

‘Mayo’s Call to Action on Climate – Local Action, Global Impact’ is an initiative of Ballina Green Town in partnership with the Mary Robinson Centre, Ballina Chamber, Mayo County Council and the West of Ireland Climate Action Regional Office.

During the weekend, Mayo’s secondary school students will meet with elected representatives about actions they would like to see taken in their locality to help them become climate resilient and low carbon.

Mayo’s decarbonising communities will also meet and network on community projects with potential to transform Mayo’s towns and villages.

At 1 p.m. on Friday, November 12, Ballina’s community will join with Mayo’s secondary school students as they bring their Call to Action on Climate to march on the streets of Ballina.

Ballina Green Town will hold two days of workshops, talks, demonstrations and walks highlighting Ballina’s circular economy as well as waste reduction, smarter energy and biodiversity projects underway by Ballina’s businesses and community groups.

Positive action towards meaningful change is at the core of all of the weekend’s events. Everyone is welcome to come along, participate and find out more about how they can be part of Mayo’s action on climate change.
