Setback for Mayo as Mullin set to move to AFL club Geelong, reports suggest
The 2020 Young Footballer of the Year, Mayo and Kilmaine star Oisin Mullin, is set to sign for AFL side Geelong for the 2022 season, it has been reported.
The 42 report that Mullin, who is among the nominees for the 2021 Young Footballer of the Year award, will join the Victoria-based club as a Category B rookie.
Mullin has been linked with a move Down Under since impressing at an AFL combine in Dublin in December 2019. Earlier that year, after an impressive campaign with the Mayo Under 20 team, he was drafted into the senior squad by manager James Horan, and he was hugely impressive as his club, Kilmaine, won the Connacht junior championship.
For his exploits in 2019, Mullin was named the Overall Male Athlete of the Year by The Connaught Telegraph, winning the Darragh Doherty Memorial Cup – named after his late cousin.
Last year he broke into the Mayo team as a starter in defence and he has been consistently among the best performers as the team reached back-to-back All-Ireland finals.
The 42 have reported that Mullin's signature with Geelong is expected to be confirmed by the AFL club in the coming days and it is anticipated that the player will travel to Australia later this month.
By linking up with the Cats, Mullin will become the third Irish player on the club's roster, joining Zach Tuohy and Mark O'Connor.
Before he departs, Mullin will be attempting to help his club win the Mayo intermediate football championship. They face Mayo Gaels in the semi-final on Saturday (November 6), with the final set to be played on Saturday, November 20.
