No more mistakes allowed for Ballina Town in Super League title pursuit

TYNAN'S TAKE: By Stuart Tynan

TO say that the recent weekend of Mayo Football League action produced a few talking points would be putting it mildly.

I made the trip to Belleek for a huge clash between Ballina Town and Westport United, a game that could have serious implications for the Town's pursuit of Ballyheane at the top of the Elverys Sports Super League.

All around the ground were enthralled with the contest on show, and Ballyheane FC chairman Walter Tuffy may just have been United's biggest supporter on the day. Watching Walter's expressions during the match as United had shots at Ballina's goal was almost as entertaining as the game itself!

Games between these two always provide entertainment and this one was no exception. United will be disappointed that they only left Ballina with a point while the hosts will think they could have won despite being with captain Benny Lavelle in the second half after he was sent off.

Ballyheane are potentially one win away from their first Super League title. If they do it, no one can say they don't deserve it.

There was just as much drama at the other end of the table when Ballyhaunis Town snatched a late winner against a youthful Castlebar Celtic side. I will hold my hands up and admit I thought the east Mayo outfit were certainties to go down but led by their inspirational captain Andy Cunnane, they look to be almost safe.

After Ballina, I went down the N26 to James McAvaddy Park for Swinford's game against Glenhest Rovers. The 'Hest first win of the season could prove crucial and while they may be downbeat following Ballyhaunis's late win, they are undoubtedly in with a big chance of remaining in the Super League. Their upcoming clash against Ballyglass - after Glenhest's game against Celtic this weekend - could be all or nothing.

Going off topic for a moment, while the Ballina v Westport game was going on you couldn't help but notice the great community spirit around the ground as the Connacht Cross Country championships was taking place down the road at Moyvalley Athletic Club. A special mention to all involved.
