Concern as Charlestown library remains closed
THE people of Charlestown are concerned about the town library being closed.
Local Councillor Gerry Murray has asked that a staff vacancy be filled to allow the centre open again.
Speaking at a local municipal district meeting today, the councillor said he had earlier met with local people who are concerned that the library is still closed.
It had closed during Covid, but the person running it had requested a transfer to Castlebar and so it was still closed.
Councillor Murray requested Mayo County Council fill that position as soon as possible, noting there were people who were happy to transfer back to Charlestown.
His call was supported by Councillor John Caulfield who said the library gets great use and it's a shame not to see it open.
Padraic Flanagan, head of the municipal district, said it was beyond the district's control but he will bring the concerns to the county librarian who will follow it up.
