Tributes paid to Newport's Dan Hoban on his passing

The death of Dan Hoban, George’s Street, Newport, is widely mourned across the county.

A native of Castlebar, many tributes have been paid to deceased since news of his passing was announced.

In a statement, Castlebar Mitchels GAA Club expressed its sadness over Dan's death.

"Dan was a very staunch GAA man and played with Mitchels in the 1950s and 1960s. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam."

Burrishoole GAA Club extended sincere condolences to the Hoban family on the passing of Dan, a former coach with the club.

Mayo GAA also paid tribute to Mr. Hoban, saying: “Dan started off stewarding for Castlebar Mitchels when they owned MacHale Park. His main position as stewart was manning the tunnel and the dressing rooms. He will be sadly missed by Mayo GAA, his club Burrishoole and everyone that knew him. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dilís.”

Warm tributes have also been paid to him on the condolences page of the death notices website, RIP.ie.

One stated: "Dan was truly imbued with the Fenian faith. A stalwart Republican and man of principle."

Another observed: "He was a real gentleman who loved his football and greyhounds."

Dan will be sadly missed by his loving wife Teresa, daughters Eithne, Teresa, Mary, Ita, Helena, Deirdre, Aileen, and Róisín, sons Séan, Donal, Padraig, Eamon and Fearghal, sister Teresa, grandchildren, great grandchildren, nephews, nieces, sons in-law, daughters in-law, relatives and a large circle of friends, to whom deepest sympathy is tendered.

His remains will be reposing in St. Dominick’s Funeral Home, Newport, on Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m.

Requiem Mass will be held on Thursday at 12 noon in St. Patrick’s Church, Newport, followed by burial in Burrishoole Cemetery.

Funeral Mass will be live streamed via the “Burrishoole Parish” Facebook Page.
