Councillor Christy Hyland

Discussions with OPW on plans for Bohea Stone

AN update on plans around the Bohea Stone will be available early next year.

The stone, near Westport, is one of the finest examples of Neolithic rock art in Ireland, and is believed to date from as early as 3,800 BC.

Mayo County Council was queried about the stone by Councillor Christy Hyland who said a nearby house was purchased a number of years ago, with plans for a project, but nothing has happened since.

He asked for a report on the stone and the house, which has been 'lying idle'.

Director of services Catherine McConnell said the council has been engaging with the OPW and there are works that may go ahead to protect the stone.

The council had protected the access to it by its acquisition of the property.

Members, she said, will be updated in the new year.
