Christmas lights switched on in Mayo's county town

The Christmas season is officially underway in Castlebar.

The Christmas Lighting Scheme has been switched on ahead of a busy festive shopping period in the county town.

Performing the ceremony at Market Square, the cathaoirleach of the Castlebar Municipal District reiterated the call for everybody to shop local.

Councillor Martin McLoughlin said: "Shopping local is the key to supporting businesses and sustaining jobs in our community.

"Castlebar is the best shopping town in the region with easy access, plenty of parking facilities and a friendly service."

His call was supported by Bernard Hughes, president of Castlebar Chamber of Commerce.

He stated there were many shopping promotions underway and great value is to be had in the town.

Members of Castlebar Concert Band played Christmas Carols at the switching-on ceremony.

The occasion also saw the unveiling of the Nativity Crib as well as the opening of Santa's Mobile Grotto which will be open on Market Square on weekends leading up to Christmas with visits by appointment only, information on the Castlebar Chamber of Commerce website and Facebook page.
