Mayo secures €450k in outdoor recreation funding
Outdoor recreation funding of €450,000 has been confirmed for Mayo.
The funding will be used for developing existing projects as well as progressing new recreational infrastructure.
A sum of €200,000 has been allocated to support a new recreational trail at Towerhill Forest and improvements to the recreational offering at nearby Moorehall.
A further €200,000 has been allocated for an upgrade of pathways on both the Killala and Turlough Greenways providing greater accessibility.
In addition, €50,000 has been allocated to the Céide Fields to carry-out engineering and environmental reports for the Wild Atlantic Way Céide Coastal Path.
Welcoming the news, Deputy Alan Dillon, the Fine Gael Fine Gael spokesperson for Tourism and Sport, said: “The funding will allow for improvements to the recreational infrastructure of our county and progress the development of new projects.
"It is great see additional funding for Moorehall which follows-on from the masterplan to develop Moore Hall and its environs.
“This includes a new recreational trail at the nearby Towerhill Forest.
“In addition, we have great work being done on the inter-urban section of the Turlough-Raheens Greewany through Castlebar at Springfield and the Old Military Barracks. Additional funding has now been provided to upgrade the non-urban portions of the Turlough greenway to provide greater accessibility.”
The announcement has also been welcomed by Deputy Dara Calleary, Deputy Michael Ring and Senator Lisa Chambers
