Council responds to complaints over traffic delays during new Mayo N5 road works

The length of traffic management at the N84 Ballinrobe Road in Castlebar has been a source of complaint from motorists over the last month.

The lights are set for 300 seconds to account for the distance between two tie-in points during construction work on the new N5 between Turlough and Westport.

This is to allow all traffic to pass through safely, along with some traffic that may be entering or exiting the site in the middle of the works at the N84 overbridge crossing point which is guided by flag men.

In a statement, Mayo County Council said this traffic management arrangement is required to prepare the N84 Ballinrobe overbridge for through traffic.

"When the traffic is transferred onto the bridge there will still be traffic management in the form of traffic lights, but the time lag should be shorter due to no crossing point traffic management," it added.
