Retired Mayo school principal publishes book on the Bible

A retired Mayo teacher has published a commentary on the Bible.

"No Room in the Inn" is the work of Tom Higgins, a former principal of Breaffy National School.

The 500-page book was favourably reviewed on the Midwest Radio programme, "Faith Alive," last Sunday.

Tom's first book was "Through Fagan's Gates, The Parish and People of Castlebar Down the Ages," published by The Connaught Telegraph.

"No Room in the Inn" is on sale at the Castle Bookshop, Castlebar.

It aims to show that the perennial questions about the origin, meaning and purpose of human life are as relevant today as when the Bible was written with an ancient audience in mind.

The answers the Bible provides are both reasonable and enlightening: in the beginning, God placed human beings in this world and appointed them to a mission of caring for the earth and for one another.

The discharge of this mission gives us a reason and a purpose for living.

It represents the first step towards the fulfilment of our destiny of union with one another and with God.

Rather than being strictly academic, the aim of the book is devotional and inspirational.

It is mainly intended for lay readers.
