First phase in €11m. Castlebar regeneration works goes to tender

PROGRESS on the €11 million urban regeneration project for Castlebar has been welcomed by Deputy Alan Dillon.

As part of Castlebar Historic Core Reactivation Initiative, the Old Post Office has moved to tender as the first phase of works on the wider project to benefit the county town.

The tender process is expected to be completed by the end of Q1 in 2022.

The Urban Regeneration and Development Fund (URDF) was launched to support more compact and sustainable development. It provides part-funding for projects that will enable a greater proportion of residential and mixed-use development to be delivered within the existing built-up footprints of our cities and large towns.

Said Deputy Dillon: “In following-up on the progress of the over €11 million URDF funding announced earlier this year, I was particularly delighted to note the first steps are well underway in drawing down this funding and making an impact on our streetscapes. I will be working to ensure work is done as quickly as possible to feel the benefits of the URDF funding to regenerate Castlebar.

“One of the first projects to proceed is Castlebar’s Old Post Office which will be repurposed as a community youth resource centre.”

The tender for the Castlebar Old Post Office is the first of many great projects that will restore the Mall and surrounding areas to the former elegance, he said.

“In time, I hope this project will be so successful that other towns will look to the work being done in Mayo to try and replicate it for themselves.

“I particularly wish to thank the staff and officials of Castlebar Municipal District for their excellent work in bringing this first step of a wider project much closer to fruition.”
