Passing of one of Castlebar's best loved personalities Peter Murphy
The death has taken place of Peter Murphy, St. Anne's, Fortfield, Castlebar.
Formerly of Eircom, he also worked as manager of An Sportlann, Castlebar, for many years.
The news of his passing is widely mourned in the community and many warm tributes have been paid to him, such is the high regard in which he was held.
A tribute by Castlebar Mitchels stated: "It is with deep sadness that the members of Castlebar Mitchels have learned of the death of Peter Murphy.
"Peter was a former president of the club.
"During his long service to the club he was manager of An Sportlann as well as coach to a number of underage teams.
"Ar dheis De go raibh a anam."
A tribute by the Mitchels Hurling Club said: "These days the word legend is loosely used but in the case of Peter Murphy it does not even come close. Our deepest sympathy to the Murphy family."
Tributes have also been paid to him on the condolences page of the death notices website, RIP.ie.
"We have great memories of him as he was a very pleasant, welcoming gentleman on all our many visits to An Sportlann," one stated.
Another said: "Peter was a proud Mayo man, fondly remembering days out in Croke Park with him."
Peter was truly one of Castlebar's best-loved personalities. He was great company and he enjoyed a laugh and a song with his many friends.
He is deeply regretted by his loving wife Kathleen, sons Noel, Stephen, Frankie, Richard and daughter Kathrina Davis, brother Jimmy, daughters-in-law Maria, Nicola and Noelle, son-in-law Keith, grandchildren, Amy, Vicki, Jesse, Luke, Cody, Hazel, Eoin, Gavin, Oran, Noah, Lexi and Lucy, sister-in-law, nephews, nieces, neighbours, relatives and friends, to whom deepest sympathy is tendered.
His remains will be reposing at Coady’s Funeral Home on Sunday morning at 10.45 a.m. with removal at 12.45 pm (via Springfield) for Funeral Mass at 1.30 p.m. in the Church of The Holy Rosary, Castlebar.
Peter will be laid to rest afterwards in Castlebar New Cemetery.
