The refurbished wrought iron lattice footbridge at the Bowers Walk, Ballinrobe.

Historic walk in south Mayo town fully open again

The Bowers Walk in Ballinrobe was fully re-opened on December 22 – just in time for Christmas.

Part of the walkway was closed for a number of months to allow for essential bridge conservation works to the riveted wrought-iron lattice footbridge at Bowers Walk, along with a further footbridge upstream in Ballinrobe.

Originally designed and fabricated in the mid-19th century as part of the canalisation of the River Robe, the works on the lattice footbridge have allowed for retention of 90% of this important historic asset.

Locals have welcomed the full re-opening of this scenic walkway, including Ballinrobe-based Fine Gael Councillor Michael Burke.

The Bowers Walk stretches for approximately three kilometres along the River Robe, starting at the bridge on Bridge Street towards Creagh Bridge along the old towpath of the canal.
