Mayo GAA club mourns passing of a loyal and hard-working member

Moy Davitts GAA Club has paid tribute to popular club member Peter Murphy, Ummoon, Foxford, whose death has taken place.

"There are no words that will truly reflect what Peter meant to us," it stated.

The tribute continued: "As a clubman, Peter was a worker.

"He spent hours every week at the pitch. He would be there at first light in the morning and was often one of the last to leave the grounds in the evening.

"He worked away quietly in the background ensuring we were ready for game days, never wanting praise or recognition for what he did.

"He held many roles within Moy Davitts down through the years.

"He helped coach teams, lined pitches, collected money at the gate, helped with the lotto, cleaned out dressing rooms, was a member of the executive, umpire, linesman, Covid officer and this year he became a player when he togged out for our Dads & Lads team.

"He was a huge supporter of all teams and particularly enjoyed watching his sons, Neil and Michael, play at all levels.

"No journey was ever too far for Peter as he travelled the county to support and help the club at every age group.

"He was someone we could always rely on. Peter would put himself out to help others - no ask was ever too big.

"He was a great man for having a conversation and always enjoyed the craic.

"He touched the lives of so many people that passed through the gates of Srath Garbh.

"Stories will be told over the coming days as we fondly remember the times we shared with Peter.

"He had a brilliant sense of humour and making others smile came naturally to him.

"While the loss to the club is one thing, it is hard to comprehend the void he is leaving in his own family.

"We express our sincere sympathies to his wife Sinead, sons Neil and Michael, daughter Collette, brothers, sisters, wider family circle and his many, many friends.

"He will be sorely missed by all of us who had the pleasure of knowing him.

"The club just won’t be the same without his beaming smile around the place. A clubman like no other.

"Peter was one in a million, a friend, a gentleman, a legend. Rest in peace, Peter.

"Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam."

Predeceased by his parents Christopher and Margaret Murphy, he is sadly missed by his loving wife Sinead, daughter Colette and sons Michael and Neil, brothers Michael and Tony, sisters Ita, Mawsie and Paula, in-laws, nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews, colleagues and many friends, to whom sympathy is tendered.

His remains will be reposing at his home this evening (Tuesday) from 5 to 8 p.m.

Requiem Mass takes place tomorrow in St Peter and Paul’s Church, Straide, at 12pm followed by burial afterwards in Straide Cemetery.

May his gentle soul rest in peace.
