Appeal for Mayo help in finding 32-year-old man missing since October

The family of Stephen Cunningham are appealing to people in the Maam/Oughterard and surrounding areas for help in locating him.

He has been missing since October 29, 2021.

A volunteer search has been organised on Sunday next, January 30, meeting at Peacocks at Maam Cross, Co. Galway, at 9 a.m. with some nearby trails identified as areas of interest.

The terrain there is tough and appropriate gear is advisable (raincoat, wellies, hi-vis jacket, walking stick).

“We are hoping to cover another large area we believe he might have been through, and I’m reaching out again in the hope that some of you may be free to join us.” said his sister, Tara.

“I can’t thank you enough for all who have helped search and spread the word to help us find him.”

Stephen, 32, was reported missing from his home in Tir na gCapaill, Ballybrit, Galway, on November 7, 2021, by his mother who had not had contact with him since October 29, 2021.

Known movements of Stephen:

5th November 2021: Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon where it is known that Stephen purchased fuel for his car, a silver VW Passat (reg 08-G-3521), at the time.

Later the same day he was seen at a Londis store at Castlebar and at a service station, Belclare, Westport, Co. Mayo. It is thought that Stephen may have visited Croagh Patrick on this date.

6th November 2021: There were further sightings of Stephen at Dunnes Stores, Briar Hill and very possibly on Middle St, Galway at approximately 3.30pm.

10th November 2021: Stephen’s car was found near the N59 at Bunnakill, Maam Cross, Galway. Gardaí believe that the car had been parked there since Sunday, November 7, 2021, and that it is possible that Stephen visited the pilgrimage spot of Mám Éan nearby.

Despite extensive searches Stephen hasn’t been located. His family remain extremely concerned for him for his safety and welfare.
