New forum to promote tourism in east and south Mayo

A NEW forum is being proposed to promote tourism in east and south Mayo.

It has been suggested by Foxford-based Councillor Neil Cruise and will come before a Claremorris-Swinford Municipal District meeting by way of notice of motion next week.

Councillor Cruise is asking councillors and management of the municipal district to investigate and consider the possibility of setting up a body to be called Mayo South East Tourism.

The group will market the tourism potential of the Claremorris/Swinford area. The primary aim of the initiative will be to drive tourism footfall in the area.

It will be charged with bringing together elected members and management of the district, tourism activity providers, existing tourism destinations, hotel and accommodation representatives, a representative of Fáilte Ireland, a representative of the council's capital tourism unit and others as a steering group for Mayo South East Tourism.

The group will then liaise with all relevant bodies, such as Mayo County Council's capital tourism unit, tourism interests in Mayo, Fáilte Ireland and relevant government tourism departments to attracts visitors to the region.
