Consultant endocrinologist recruited for Mayo University Hospital
MAYO Fine Gael TD Alan Dillon has warmly welcomed the news that a consultant endocrinologist has been recruited for Mayo University Hospital.
Said Deputy Dillon: “I raised the matter by numerous parliamentary questions to the Minister for Health after the service was withdrawn from the Castlebar facility last October and pregnant woman with diabetes were forced to travel to University Hospital Galway for the service as a result. I also wrote to hospital manager Catherine Donohue on the seriousness of the matter and was advised at the time that a recruitment process was in place and each patient was being dealt with on a case by case basis.
“I am delighted today to confirm that Mayo University Hospital has recruited Dr. Christina Newman, consultant endocrinologist, who will take up position this week.
“Dr. Newman will be on site at MUH on a weekly basis.
“This will provide life-changing support to the people in Mayo suffering from diabetes, not to mention other conditions like osteoporosis and thyroid diseases.”
