Funding of €4,324,887 has been secured under the Local Sports Capital Allocations benefitting 58 organisations around Mayo.

Additional funding of €491,624 has been secured under the Regional Sports Capital Allocations benefitting five Mayo-based organisations.

Deputy Dillon commented: “It is an excellent good news Friday when we see over 60 projects around Mayo which will benefit from this funding of over €4.8 million.

"I had been consistently calling for an increased funding pot to ensure as many organisations as possible.

"There was a record number of applications for these grants and the government responded with the most significant level of individual awards ever.”

“Sport is crucial for all communities and this funding will go a long way in building stronger communities. It is great to see so many projects in Mayo benefit from sports capital funding. I look forward to seeing lots of construction activity in all parts of the county over the coming months and years.”

Deputy Michael Ring stated: “I am delighted that this substantial funding has been secured for sports projects in Mayo.

"This funding allocation will benefit people in local clubs/organisations by giving them more opportunities to get involved in sport, whatever their ability.”

"The Sports Capital and Equipment Programme is the most important way in which the Government assists in the development and refurbishment of sporting facilities and in the purchase of non-personal sports equipment.

“Sporting organisations are a very important part of rural and community life in Ireland. I take this opportunity to thank all the volunteers involved in these sporting clubs and organisations for the tireless work that they do."

Welcoming the announcement, Senator Chambers commented: "I’m delighted to see such a strong investment in grassroots sports from this Government, and particularly happy to see such a strong investment in Mayo.

"I’ve been engaging closely with both Minister Chambers and local clubs to ensure the best possible outcome for the county.

"It is great to see crowds back at big sporting events in recent weeks but our key focus is to get as many people participating as possible.

“I'm delighted to see such a strong focus in supporting grassroots sport in communities.

"Volunteer clubs in towns and villages across the county will be able to deliver really important projects aimed at improving participation across the board, providing enhanced facilities for clubs with strong female participation and supporting clubs active in disadvantaged communities.

"The record level funding allocation announced today was achieved with the support of my party colleague and Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform, Michael McGrath. It reflects Government’s ongoing support to sport during the pandemic as it emerges from the challenges of the past two years.

"It also reflects the funding challenges facing clubs across the country and the vital role that sport plays in supporting community and individual wellbeing, a role that came into sharp focus during the pandemic.

"Finally, I have been advised by Minister Chambers that all unsuccessful applicants will be given the opportunity to appeal the Department’s decision and information in this regard will be made available to them by the department.”

Castlebar Councillor Ger Deere has welcomed the allocations to all clubs and organisations in the Castlebar Municipal District.
