Ireland West Airport and Mayo’s lack of jobs

by Auld Stock

THE national census will be taken up in April next.

The last census recorded a small drop in the population of County Mayo.

Some parts of Mayo, particularly in the north of the county, appear to be totally overlooked in the provision of jobs.

Local schools are being badly hit by the drop in pupil numbers. Football clubs are also suffering from a drop in the population.

Schools are the heartbeat of communities. They give families a sense of belonging and pride in their area.

The Industrial Development Association tell us that many jobs are being created in the provinces.

To be honest, this is hard to swallow particularly in places like north Mayo.

Ireland West Airport is one of the greatest developments ever to happen in the west of Ireland, a lasting memorial to Monsignor James Horan and his colleagues, men and women with pride in their county.

However, very few industrial jobs have followed since the airport was opened.

Those involved in the running of the airport and the people of Mayo deserve better treatment.

Mind you, our public reps aren’t exactly breaking down the doors of Dáil Éireann or shouting from the rooftops to highlight the obvious need for jobs in County Mayo.

Let’s hear from you, folks!
