Mayo councillor seeks subsidy to meet farm fertiliser costs

A MAYO councillor has called for farmers to receive a payment to help meet rising fertiliser costs.

Fertiliser prices have more than doubled in some instances, increasing the pressure on farmers as other input prices have risen too.

A north Mayo councillor has requested that farmers receive a subsidy to ease some of the burden.

Councillor Sean Carey has tabled a motion for the monthly meeting of Mayo County Council calling on the council to write to the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Charlie McConalogue, requesting that a subsidy of €250 per tonne of fertiliser purchased be provided to all farmers from January 1 up to June 30, 2022, to a maximum of 10 tonne per farmer.

His motion is on the agenda for this afternoon's meeting of the local authority.
