Mayo GAA pays tribute to Ballinrobe GAA stalwart Billy Horan

Mayo GAA has stated that everyone associated with the sport was saddened to learn of the passing of Ballinrobe and Mayo GAA stalwart Billy Horan.

Predeceaaed by his loving wife Ina, he will be sadly missed by his sons Michael, Liam and Maurice, daughters Liz and Sara.

A statement by the organisation stated: "Billy was one of the longest-serving GAA officials in the county, holding several key roles within his club, at divisional board level and at county board level.

"Billy had an immense passion for the GAA and followed his beloved club and county to all four corners of the country.

"A former teacher, Billy became synonymous with sport and local news reporting over the decades and his insightful match reports were published in all of the local Mayo newspapers."

Mayo GAA chairperson Seamus Touhy said that Billy was one of life’s true gentlemen.

“Billy was such a kind and caring person. He just loved the GAA and he loved giving back to his community and his county.

"Everyone associated with Mayo GAA had a respectful word to say about Billy and he will be sorely missed.

"On behalf of Mayo GAA and all the clubs in the county, I want to send our deepest sympathies to his family,” commented Touhy.

Billy held the positions of chairman of Ballinrobe GAA Club, chairman of the South Mayo GAA Board, PRO and president of the Mayo GAA County Board and secretary of Connacht Scór for many years.

Billy began his teaching career in St Mary’s College, Ballygar, before taking up a post in the former Christian Brothers School (CBS) in Ballinrobe.

In 1990, he joined the staff of Ballinrobe Community School and remained there until his retirement in 1998.

Reposing at Cummins Funeral Home, Ballinrobe, this evening (Thursday) from 5 until 7.30 p.m.

Removal from his residence on Friday to St. Mary’s Church, Ballinrobe, for Funeral Mass at 12 noon.

Burial afterwards in the New Cemetery, Ballinrobe.
