Urgent appeal for reduced speed limit at notorious Mayo junction

An elected member of Mayo County Council is demanding the speed limit close to a junction on the N60 on the outskirts of Balla be reduced to 60 kilometres per hour.

Councillor Cyril Burke made his appeal in the aftermath of a serious accident that took place recently at the head of the Ardboley Road in the town when an articulated truck went off the road as it approached the junction.

Speaking at today's meeting of Mayo Roads strategic policy committee, Councillor Burke said residents of the area are very concerned for their safety.

He requested Paul Dolan, senior roads engineer with Mayo County Council, to raise the matter with a Department of Transport inspector at a meeting arranged for tomorrow.

"I want Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) to review the matter of the speed limit at this location, which is currently 80 km/h.

"We need this speed limit reduced urgently to 60 km/h.

"The reduced limit would result in further traffic calming measures being put in place which would be a huge help at this location. It's an urgent situation."
