Closure of east Mayo junction on N5 before councillors this week

THE proposed closure of a junction onto the N5 near Swinford will come before councillors for discussion this week.

Members of the Claremorris-Swinford Municipal District are being asked to consider the extinguishment of rights of way on what is known locally as the old dump road at Carrowbaun, Swinford.

The route connects the Swinford bypass and old Castlebar Road, near the Kiltimagh Road, and is used by motorists to get to Meelick and by local farmers.

There has been opposition locally to the road being closed, with more than 100 observations submitted to Mayo County Council.

A technical report and the submissions will be before district councillors for consideration when they meet tomorrow (Wednesday) afternoon.

Safety concerns are behind the proposal to close the junction.
