Tooreen traffic calming request
THE urgent need for traffic calming in the village of Tooreen has been raised with Mayo County Council.
Councillor Neil Cruise has requested an update on all traffic calming investigations, proposals being considered and funding applications for works that have been submitted for Tooreen.
In a notice of motion to come before this afernoon's (Wednesday) monthly municipal district, he stated: 'I wish to stress the necessity for the installation of physical traffic calming measures including the installation of a signal controlled pedestrian crossing of the N83 from Tooreen School to the car park and amenity area on the opposite side of the road given the plans of the community to significantly upgrade the playground area and its environs.'
In a written response in advance of the meeting, Councillor Cruise was told the N83 at Tooreen is not included in the current list of TII high collision locations and so is not on the council's safety programme.
To progress the matter, speed and pedestrian surveys will have to be undertaken followed by a feasibility report detailing any measure which are deemed necessary at the location.
The councillor was told a traffic count was completed during the Covid pandemic and submitted to TII, but no resolution of the matter materialised.
The council will reorganise a traffic/pedestrian survey and reapply for works.
