Traffic bottleneck at west Mayo junction

A TRAFFIC bottleneck is occurring in Westport where the Leenane Road meets the Quay Road.

Snarls at Peter Street and Tubberhill have been resolved, but it has created an issue with traffic backing up at this location now.

Councillor Christy Hyland, at a municipal district meeting, said signage is needed on the West Road to divert traffic right and over by the former Scott's Bakery to get to the far side of the town.

Locals know about this route but perhaps visitors stick to the main roads, he suggested.

There are going to be major traffic build ups at the Quay Road junction, he warned.

Councillor Brendan Mulroy said it was frustrating for people. They had solved the problems at Tubberhill but it has now moved.

He requested the council look at the matter. Senior engineer Kieran Lynn said the solution ultimately was to have a southern relief road.

On either of the routes above, you were going into the core of the town.
