Frustration as Breaffy speed reduction remains unresolved

FRUSTRATION is growing as the Breaffy speed limit reduction issue remains unresolved.

Councillor Michael Kilcoyne has expressed his 'disappointment' having seen a document which said a part 8 planning application was likely to come before them in quarter 3 of 2022.

“How many more people have to be killed before this is dealt with,” he asked at a Castlebar Municipal District meeting.

“It is dragging on for five years now.”

Councillors were told in January they would have a part 8 before them shortly but there was still no sign of it.

It was unacceptable, he commented.

Councillor Blackie Gavin agreed that it was getting 'shockingly frustrating' and it was time the matter was put to bed.

The minister had come out and said it was a reserve function for members to reduce speed limits.

The sooner the plan came before them so they can vote on it, the better.

The increased levels of traffic in Breaffy - motor and pedestrian - was highlighted by Councillor Ger Deere.

He pointed out that the Covid testing and vaccination centres are both located there and more recently 40 children from Ukraine have started attending the local national school.

There is a great necessity to get the matter progressed.
