Design works for €3m. investment at Ballintubber Abbey completed
The design works on the proposed Ballintubber Abbey Culture and Heritage Visitor Centre have been completed, Mayo TD Alan Dillon has confirmed.
The project development is now expected to progress through to the construction tender stage shortly.
There is excitement in the Ballintubber community with an investment of over €3million starting to come to fruition.
Deputy Dillon said: “This project is being led by Mayo County Council with funding from the Rural Regeneration and Development Fund of €2,677,352 and a further €350,000 from the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage.
"It is great to see a project worth in excess of €3 million progressing through to the construction tender stage in the near future.
“Last July, it was my pleasure to invite Heritage and Electoral Reform Minister, Malcolm Noonan, to visit the Abbey, at which he allocated €350,000 to Ballintubber Abbey.
"The funding will allow for works on the reconstruction of the East Wing of the Abbey and build on the over 800 years of history this landmark heritage location.
“Ballintubber Abbey is an incredibly special place and the new Culture and Heritage Visitor Centre will really put it on the map for culture, heritage and tourism.
"Once up and running, it will provide a great boost to the local area and further bolster the abbey as a historical gem which the local community is incredibly proud of.”
