Tony Hetherington will be losing his long locks this Thursday.

Big haircut fundraiser in support of Mayo's Butterfly Garden

TWO years since he last saw a pair of scissors, a Mayo man is having a big haircut this week, raising funds for the Butterfly Garden, which remembers children taken too soon.

Tony Hetherington, an employment advisor at Seetec Job Path in Castlebar, will be getting his hair cut at lunchtime tomorrow (Thursday) at Seetec's base, Unit 12C in the N5 Business Park, Moneen, Castlebar.

Tony explains how it all came about: “In March 2020, Covid-19 restrictions meant we had to work from home. I decided that I would grow out my hair until we were allowed to go back into the office again.

“Two years have passed, and the time has now come for me to get my hair cut. I am doing this to raise funds for the Butterfly Garden project in Co. Mayo.”

In 2021, with the help of many kind and generous people, including his colleagues in Seetec SESI, Tony raised over €2,500 for the Butterfly Garden, which is in Swinford, by completing a marathon a week walking challenge, totalling 52 marathons in 30 weeks.

To raise additional much needed funds to help with the completion of the project, he is now asking for sponsorship to have my lovely long hair cut (not shaved!).

The Butterfly Garden will be a community garden recognising the little lives taken too soon. It will recognise miscarriages, stillbirths, neonatal, infant and child deaths.

It is hoped the garden will bring comfort to many bereaved families in the future and let them know they are not alone.
