Rising costs could impact Mayo's €130m. road work programme

A ROADS work programme valued at €130 million has been approved by councillors for Mayo in 2022.

This is one of the largest ever in the county, but there are concerns about the rising costs of materials.

A query about costs came from Councillor Christy Hyland at a meeting of Mayo County Council where he said what you purchased six months, you won't get it today.

Director of services Tom Gilligan said there are concerns but the council can't control the uncontrollables.

No one knows when the situation in Ukraine will stop and it is having implications for costs and supplies, such a fuel and bitumen.

Contracts have been signed. There is no additional funding from the department or TII and it may have implications towards the end of the year.

Councillor Damien Ryan said the roads programme involved a significant investment.

He had one stipulation - that the R332 Kilmaine to Foxhall be prioritised, a road that has seen its traffic quadruple since the motorway in Galway opened.
