Sabina Higgins to launch We Are Mayo book at county library

IRELAND’S First Woman, Sabina Higgins, will officially launch We Are Mayo, the book written by Tom Brett and Sean Rice, in the County Library, Castlebar, on Thursday evening, May 5, at 5 p.m.

The book was due to be launched just when the Covid virus struck in the spring of 2000 and the country went into lockdown.

Since travel was restricted in Australia because of the virus this is the first opportunity Tom Brett has had to fly back to Ireland from his home in Freemantle where he is a general practitioner.

Tom, a native of Charlestown, is also professor and director General Practice and Primary Health Care research at the University of Notre Dame Australia Fremantle.

The book is a photographic and written record of facets of the beautiful county of Mayo that demands a special place not only in the bookcases of family homes but also in libraries, hotels, guest houses, pubs, cafes and restaurants and waiting rooms of hospitals and nursing homes, etc.

It has already won praise for the excellence of its design and print and the quality of photographs that adorn its pages.

In a foreword to the book Sabina writes beautifully about her early years and growing up in her native Ballindine and surrounding area.
