Passing of retired Mayo teacher is deeply regretted

The death has occurred of Micheál (Hawley) Murren, Upper Main Street, Ballyhaunis.

A retired member of the teaching staff of Ballyhaunis Community School, he was held in very high regard in the community, a true gentleman.

Predeceased by his sister Mary Commins, Knock, he is deeply regretted by his brother Eamonn, brother-in-law Paddy Commins, nephew John and his wife Trina (Knock), niece Marie and her husband Steve Barcoe (Clonmel), grandnephews Daniel and Niall, grandniece Lilly, neighbours, relatives and a large circle of friends.

Deepest sympathy is extended to the bereaved family on their loss.

Many tributes are being paid to him on the condolences page of the death notices website, RIP.ie.

Mary Mannion, Head of French, NUI, Galway, wrote: "I was privileged to have Micheál as my maths teacher up to Leaving Certificate in BCS.

"A wonderful teacher, kind and respectful always.

"May his noble soul rest in peace and his memory be a blessing to those who mourn him."

Another tribute stated: "Mr. Murren was a great role model throughout my years in school."

Ballyhaunis GAA Club, in a tribute, stated: "Ballyhaunis GAA is saddened to learn of the sudden passing of Mícheál Murren, late of Upper Main Street.

"We offer our sincere condolences to Micheál’s brother Eamonn, to the Commins family (Knock), other relatives, neighbours in Upper Main Street, former colleagues and past pupils at Ballyhaunis Community School and to his wide circle of friends.

"Mícheál was a lifelong member and loyal supporter of Ballyhaunis and Mayo GAA and served his club faithfully over many years as player, officer and member of the club’s executive committee.

"He was a very astute judge of the game of Gaelic football and will be remembered as a very successful coach to his club and school’s underage teams from the 1970s -1990s.

"Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam uasal. Ní bheidh a leithéid ann arís.

"RIP Hawley."

Reposing at Donnellan's Funeral home, Clare Street, Ballyhaunis, on Sunday evening from 5 o'clock until 7 o'clock.

Funeral will arrive to St Patrick's Church, Ballyhaunis, on Monday morning for funeral Mass at 11 o'clock with burial afterwards in the local cemetery.
