Mayo All-Stars headline seminar on men's health

MAYO GAA All-Stars Kevin McStay and Cora Staunton are to headline a major public health seminar on the theme of men's health that is taking place in Claremorris.

Former county stars McStay and Staunton will be joined by clinical psychologist Dr. Eamonn Smith from Castlebar, Ballindine GP Ken Egan and former RTÉ broadcaster Ciaran Mullooly, who will chair the event at the McWilliam Park Hotel on Thursday, June 16, at 8 p.m.

This event is being staged by Roscommon Leader Partnership and the HSE as part of International Men's Health Week (MHW), which will take place from June 13 to 19. This week offers an ideal opportunity for everyone to do their bit to improve the health of men and boys.

The theme for the island of Ireland this year is 'MISSION: is POSSIBLE' and the call to men (and those who support the health of men) is: 'The Action Starts with You'.

The facts about men's health are quite stark: Local men die younger than women do. Males have higher death rates than females for almost all of the leading causes of death and at all ages. Poor lifestyles are responsible for a high proportion of chronic diseases. Late presentation to health services can lead to a large number of problems becoming untreatable in men

Castlebar doctor Eamon Smith will talk at this event about male socialisation and also about changes that need to be made by helping agencies to address men's needs. He will also speak of encouraging signs such as employment assistance programmes within both public and private workplaces, wellness programmes within sporting organisations, etc., in order to show that views are ever changing.

On the evening of the event in Claremorris, Croi, the west of Ireland based agency set up to conquer heart disease and stroke, will present a special information stand from 7 p.m. onwards with the opportunity for all men to have their blood pressure checked alongside a selection of other health stands.

This is a free event and tickets are not necessary. Just turn up the night.
