Mayo GAA fans expressing dissatisfaction over venue selection

Mayo GAA supporters have been turning to social media to outline their frustration and disappointment over the county's second round All-Ireland SFC qualifier against Kildare being fixed for Croke Park at 6 p.m. next Saturday.

The majority view is that the decision is putting undue expense on loyal fans who won't be able to return home by train due to the late finishing time.

They have also pointed to the huge cost of staying overnight in Dublin.

Loyal Castlebar supporter Pat Kearns said yet again the GAA is treating fans with no consideration, forcing long commutes on fans from the west of Ireland.

"A neutral venue should not mean Croke Park when one team is on the doorstep. Diesel and accommodation are so expensive now."

He tagged Minister of State at the Department of Sport, Jack Chambers, asking him to look into it.

Colin Redmond said the traffic will be ridiculous in the capital as Ireland are playing Scotland in the Aviva Stadium at 5 p.m. in the UEFA Nations League.

Sinéad Nic An Fhailí said she is very unhappy with the decision.

"Three western teams and fans travelling to Dublin when there are good pitches available. Mayo fans trying to leave Dublin at 8.15 p.m. or pay crazy prices for a hotel (if you could find a room). GAA needs to check priorities."

Seamus Ward said it would be great if a special train was put on for the Roscommon and Mayo supporters to return home.

"Guess it won't happen!" he added.

Alan Mee said the GAA should be more aware of the expense placed on supporters whether it is travelling to Dublin or trying to see the match on Sky Sports.

"A missed opportunity to help the fans out," he stated.

Peter Byrne disagreed. He said teams moan about not getting experience in Croke Park and now they are getting it.

"Some county teams and their supporters would give their right arm for a game at HQ, mine included," he outlined.
